My Secret to Client Retention: A Case for Affective Periodization

In this article, we explain the relationship between affect, or feelings of pleasure/displeasure, and exercise adherence. We discuss why more trainers should place a greater emphasis on affect and explain how to use the Feeling Scale to adjust a client’s training program. Lastly, we hypothesize and explain why experiencing a more positive affective response during exercise may lead to superior physiological adaptations.
